YOUTHS URGED TO LEAD FIGHT AGAINST SUBSTANCE ABUSE

The Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts has called on young people to take an active role in addressing drug and substance abuse, as well as mental health challenges, to enhance their participation in national development and social transformation.

Minister Elvis Nkandu made the call during a Town Hall Meeting at Cavendish University, held as part of the 2025 National Youth Week celebrations.

The event brought together over 400 students from various universities and youth resource centers under the theme: “Voices Amplified and Innovations Ignited,” which highlights the importance of empowering young people to speak out, innovate, and drive change.

In his address, Mr. Nkandu expressed concern over the rising cases of substance abuse among youth and the growing mental health crisis.

Young people are the future of our nation, and it is crucial to address the issues affecting their well-being,” said Mr. Nkandu.

The minister further encouraged young people to engage in productive activities such as sports, creative arts, and entrepreneurship, emphasizing their role in personal growth and national development.

He also urged communities, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups to collaborate in addressing substance abuse and mental health stigma.

Meanwhile, Cavendish University Executive Director, Reginald Rainey, reminded young people of their critical role in national affairs.

He encouraged them to believe in themselves and prepare for the future by acquiring education and skills relevant to today’s job market and economic demands.
