WE NEED TO PROTECT WATER AGAINST POLLUTION – KEARNS

Care for Nature Zambia Executive Director, Nsama Kearns, has raised concerns over pollution affecting water bodies across the country, particularly in areas near mining operations.

Ms. Kearns warned that such pollution poses serious health risks to nearby communities, noting that it often takes time for people to realize that their illnesses are linked to environmental contamination, and even longer for these issues to be detected and addressed.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Ms. Kearns expressed disappointment that communities expect development when mining companies set up operations as opposed to threats to their health and well-being.

“As an organization focused on environmental issues and community rights,  a multi-stakeholder approach is essential and the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation must take a more active role in monitoring pollution levels in rivers,” said Ms. Kerans.

She also urged the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to collaborate with the Mine Safety Department to conduct regular inspections of mining operations, especially in cases where pollution affects public health.

She emphasized the need to educate mining companies on adhering to environmental regulations and respecting community rights, stating that local residents deserve better living conditions.

“Mining companies must compensate communities for the health risks they face. The full extent of pollution’s impact on these communities is still unknown,” Ms. Kearns stressed.

She further called on other Non-Governmental Organizations to join Care for Nature Zambia in establishing community watch groups that would conduct regular visits, gather public concerns, and work with the government to find mutually beneficial solutions.
