University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) President, Dixon Mutambo, has commended government for implementing measures to ensure pedestrians use the footbridge when crossing Great East Road.
This follows an announcement by Acting Transport and Logistics Minister, Charles Milupi, that government will install pedestrian barriers to enforce the use of the UNZA footbridge and enhance road safety.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mutambo however urged government to also introduce measures compelling motorists to slow down when approaching UNZA to reduce fatal road traffic accidents.
“As much as these barriers are necessary, government should also put in place measures to ensure motorists reduce their speed when approaching UNZA as many drivers exceed the speed limit,” said Mr. Mutambo.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mutambo has called on relevant authorities, including UNZA Management, to deploy security personnel to man the UNZA footbridge for pedestrian safety.
He expressed concern that street children often loiter around the bridge, particularly at night, instilling fear among pedestrians and discouraging its use.
