WE DID NOT STORM CHURCH IN NDOLA – POLICE

Zambia Police Public Relations officer Rae Hamoonga has refuted reports alleging that the police stormed Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Ndola’s Hillcrest area, to search for opposition political party leaders who were reported to be in the city.

Mr. Hamoonga says a team of police officers were instead along a road near Divine Mercy Parish Catholic Church in Hillcrest, to observe the movement of people in the area.

He said that it was during this time that a male congregant  identified as Kamwale Phiri, aged 66, began to take pictures of the officers and their police vehicle.

“The individual was approached by the officers and asked why he was taking the photographs and a picture of the officers was found after an inspection of his phone,” said Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that Mr. Phiri was taken to hillcrest police for questioning adding that the case was resolved and closed.

He said that the police remains committed to maintaining  peace and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
