WE ADDRESSING THE ENERGY CRISIS –  KAPALA

Minister of Energy Peter Kapala says the Energy Regulation Board, ERB, has instituted a mechanism to facilitate approval of Power Purchase Agreements, and tariffs within 48 hours as opposed to 90 days.

Mr. Kapala says this will be implemented in order to ease the cost of doing business in the sector.

The minister  was speaking in Lusaka today, when he officiated at the Energy Crisis Indaba under the theme, “Navigating the Energy Crisis Towards Sustainable Energy Solutions for Zambia’s Future.”

“The Ministry launched the Integrated Resource Plan in 2023 which is aimed at providing sustainable solutions to Zambia’s challenges in the electricity sub-sector,” said Mr. Kapala.

He disclosed that ERB has streamlined the licensing process in order to apply light handed regulations on entities that want to set up generation plants up to 5 megawatts.

And ERB Board Chairperson James Banda said there is need for stakeholder collaboration, as many sectors in the country were affected resulting in the current electricity generation deficit of more than 750 to 900MW.
