The Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) has embraced technology to strengthen its capacity in monitoring water levels and quality, while improving access to climate-related information.
The Authority says these innovations will help stakeholders, including farmers, make informed decisions in planning and managing their activities.
Speaking during a media stakeholders engagement workshop in Lusaka today, WARMA Acting Director General, Misozi Lumpa, in a speech delivered on her behalf by WARMA Water Resources Management and Information officer Frank Nyoni, highlighted the Authority’s efforts in advancing water management through digital solutions.
Ms. Lumpa announced that WARMA has developed a customized Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) to enhance flood preparedness adding that the system will generate and disseminate timely and reliable flood-related advisories to safeguard lives, protect property, and support farmers in planning adequately.
“This innovation will allow the Authority to alert communities in advance, ensuring timely evacuation and preparation to minimize the devastating impacts of floods,” said Ms. Lumpa.
She further noted that the system is a crucial tool in strengthening national decision-making capabilities and safeguarding infrastructure, including dams.
Ms. Lumpa said that with support from cooperating partners, WARMA has developed a web-based Water Quality Management Information System designed for proactive monitoring of both surface and groundwater quality.
“This system will provide national institutions, sector stakeholders, and the public with easy access to water quality data,” said Ms. Lumpa.
Meanwhile, she urged media houses to collaborate with WARMA in raising awareness on water resource management to promote conservation and sustainability.
