VEEPS REMARKS ON POVERTY IS MOCKERY TO ZAMBIANS

Governance expert Brebner Changala has expressed disappointment over remarks made by Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, who recently stated that changing governments or political leaders will not end poverty in Zambia, but that addressing the issue requires a shift in policies and mindset.

Mr. Changala described the statement as unfortunate and disheartening, arguing that it implies the decision to vote the United Party for National Development (UPND) into office in 2021 was both unnecessary and a mistake.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Changala said the Vice President’s remarks reflect a failure by the current administration to effectively govern and suggested that the UPND is acknowledging growing public appetite for change ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“That kind of statement is meant to mislead citizens into thinking that a change of government would make no difference to their lives, even as poverty persists,” said Mr. Changala.

He stressed that rather than issuing discouraging statements, government should be outlining clear actions it is taking to tackle poverty, something he says the UPND was elected to do.

Mr. Changala further accused the ruling party of avoiding accountability for its unfulfilled campaign promises, particularly those focused on improving the livelihoods of ordinary Zambians.
