Opposition United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) Leader, Charles Chanda, has criticized the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ)’s suggestion to extend the announcement period for presidential election results, stating that this could create unnecessary uncertainty and erode public trust in the electoral process.
Mr. Chanda said this following the electoral law reforms recently proposed by ECZ.
In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Chanda argued that the proposed changes are designed to benefit those in power rather than promote a fair electoral process.
He has accused the current ECZ of being a branch of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), claiming that it favors the interests of the current government.
Mr. Chanda has since proposed a stakeholders meeting involving political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral experts to ensure that all voices are heard and that the reforms serve the interests of the Zambian populace.
“By embracing an inclusive dialogue, stakeholders can work towards electoral laws that truly reflect the will of the people”, said Mr. Chanda.
