The United Party for National Development (UPND) has expressed concern over the Patriotic Front’s (PF) handling of the funeral arrangements for the late former Republican President Edgar Lungu, calling for unity and respect in honoring the late leader.
In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda condemned the PF for coming up with what he described as a “parallel funeral programme,” arguing that it undermines national unity and disregards constitutional and cultural norms.
“A solid line should, therefore, be drawn between political statements and arguments, and national programmes such as the death of the former President,” said Mr. Imenda.
Mr. Imenda has appeal to the conscience of the PF to allow the nation to mourn the departed leader with dignity and honor deserving of his status.
He has since urged the PF Party to rethink its position and allow government to carry out its functions regarding the funeral, stating that this is no time for politicking or seeking to gain some political mileage over a solemn function.
Mr. Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth President, died on Thursday, 5th June in South Africa.
