UPND STANDS FIRM ON CHAMPIONING CYBER LAWS

United Party for National Development (UPND) Media Director, Mark Simuuwe has rejected a report from the United Nations (UN) that was circulating on social media over an infringement of the law and freedom of expression, describing it as misdirected.

Mr. Simuuwe cited that the report is attacking the country’s sovereignty and is different to that of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other agencies.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Simuuwe said every country has cyber laws which is a tool used to curb misinformation hence the need to regulate social media.

“Those that have been convicted for hate speech went against the laws of the country which criminalises hate speech just like the laws of the people that prepared the UN report,” said Mr. Simuuwe.

He has since advised citizens to abide by the law and not promote disinformation and hate speech.
