UNZA LECTURER DECRIES UNFAIR GOLD PRICES FOR ARTISANAL MINERS

A University of Zambia (UNZA) lecturer in the School of Mines, Jewette Masinja, has expressed concern over the unfair pricing of gold for artisanal and small-scale miners (ASGMs), stating that existing mining laws have done little to support their growth.

Speaking at a media breakfast in Lusaka today, Dr. Masinja noted that the Minerals Commission Act, which is the first law to comprehensively address artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), brings hope for much-needed reforms.

He highlighted that one of the major challenges faced by ASGMs is unfair pricing by buyers, which has hindered their ability to succeed in the industry.

“Challenges like unfair pricing have made it difficult for small-scale miners to thrive in the industry and there is a need for proper formalization to ensure fair trade,” said Dr. Masinja.

Meanwhile, PlanetGold Zambia National Project Manager, Abigail Mwailenge, revealed that her organization is working closely with ASGMs to promote mercury-free mining, which has become widespread in the sector.

She explained that their efforts focus on formalizing the industry, improving access to finance and markets, providing technical solutions and knowledge sharing, and creating awareness about responsible mining practices.
