UNPLANNED SETTLEMENTS LINKED TO CHOLERA OUTBREAKS

Government says unplanned settlements in the country are also a contributing factor to the outbreak of cholera.

Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mambo Hamaundu, revealed that illegal structures not only disrupt planned urban development but also increase the risk of disease outbreaks.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Hamaundu cautioned that such structures are at risk of demolition and urged the public to consult the law before initiating any construction projects.

“Government, through the ministry, is enhancing its presence in many jurisdictions to ensure the spread of cholera is curtailed emphasizing proactive measures to prevent outbreaks, particularly in Lusaka,” said Mr. Hamaundu.

The Permanent Secretary also appealed to members of the public to avoid indiscriminate disposal of garbage, noting that such practices pose serious health risks and contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases.
