TRAGIC MINE ACCIDENT SPARKS RENEWED CALL FOR WORKER SAFETY

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security has expressed sadness with the tragic death of a dump truck driver at Kalumbila Mine’s Sentinel Pit that happened on June 21, 2025.

Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Mwaka Ndawa, revealed that preliminary findings suggest the fatal accident occurred when the driver lost control of the truck while descending into the pit.

Ms. Ndawa said that the vehicle is reported to have struck a hole, igniting a fire that claimed the driver’s life.

“This fateful incident is a harrowing reminder of the critical importance of occupational safety and health in the workplace,” said Ms. Ndawa in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

She said the Ministry will work closely with the Mine Safety Department and other relevant agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and identify any safety lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Ms. Ndawa further stressed the urgent need for stricter enforcement of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations in the mining sector, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.
