TRADE UNION BACKS REVISION OF  8 HOUR WORK POLICY

The Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) has supported calls to revise the traditional eight-hour work policy, arguing that it is no longer suitable for fostering socio-economic growth in the country.

The calls for more flexible working hours have been echoed by President Hakainde Hichilema, who has advocated for performance-based work schedules, particularly in the public service.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Union General Secretary, Nelson Mwale, said the current system needs to be revised to give workers room to explore other economic ventures, including entrepreneurship.

“Zambians must adopt entrepreneurial skills to expand their income streams and achieve financial security, especially during this tough economic period, and this can only happen if the 8 hour work schedule is abolished,” said Mr. Mwale.

He further stated that the current rigid working culture contributes to low productivity and prevents many citizens from diversifying their sources of income.
