President Hakainde Hichilema has called for a renewed culture of discipline, accountability, and efficiency within the civil service, emphasizing the need for timely delivery of work assignments.
Speaking in Livingstone during the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) Quadrennial Conference, President Hichilema expressed concern over growing inefficiency in public offices, partly due to excessive use of social media during working hours.
“Some people report to work and spend too much time on social media instead of focusing on their duties, and if the country is to move forward, there is need to develop a culture of hard work and timely execution.
Mr. Hichilema reaffirmed government’s commitment to achieving a 6% economic growth target, describing it as vital for unlocking business opportunities, creating jobs, and addressing key challenges in the public sector.
The President also urged CSAWUZ and other unions to support the fight against corruption, stressing that integrity and transparency are critical to delivering real development.
On the issue of pensions, particularly concerns around lump sum payments, President Hichilema assured workers that government is actively consulting stakeholders to find a fair and sustainable solution.
“Engagements are ongoing to ensure the system works effectively without harming the pension fund,” said Mr. Hichilema.
