Agriculture Expert, Gilbert Banda has expressed sadness over what he termed as corrupt practices in the Agriculture sector amidst government’s efforts to ensure food security.
On January 8, 2025, Police in Zimba district of Southern Province detained four men, including a Camp Agricultural Committee (CAC) member for allegedly defrauding three women of their Farming Input Support Program (FISP) packs worth more than k76,000.
But speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Banda said the FISP program is designed to support vulnerable farmers and that corruption does not only undermine the programs effectiveness but also perpetuates poverty and inequality among rural areas.
“Government should strengthen institutions and systems to prevent corruption which includes implementing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms,” said Mr. Banda.
He also urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take decisive action against those involved in corruption practices and must work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Mr. Banda highlighted the need for government to sensitize farmers, extension officers and other stakeholders about the dangers of corruption and the importance of transparency and accountability.
