United Party for National Development (UPND) says involving Traditional Leaders in the employment process does not bypass established procedures, but rather enriches the process with local knowledge that can contribute to a more balanced and equitable distribution of opportunities.
This is in reaction to Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) statement, condemning President Hakainde Hichilema for saying chiefs would be consulted to recommend candidates for public sector positions so as to rectify historical employment imbalances.
UPND Deputy Media Director, Cheelo Katambo, says all candidates recommended by traditional leaders will still be subject to the rigorous recruitment criteria and scrutiny required for public sector positions.
“Transparency and fairness will continue to be upheld,” assured Mr. Katambo in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Katambo said TI-Z has misinterpreted what the President meant.
“The government remains committed to ensuring that recruitment remains competitive and meritocratic. Consulting chiefs is one component of a wider strategy to ensure no community is left behind in the national development agenda,” said Mr. Katambo.
He encouraged all stakeholders, including TIZ, to recognize that Zambia’s development requires collaboration between various sectors and stakeholders.
