THREATS TO JOURNALISTS AND MEDIA WORKERS ARE THREATS TO DEMOCRACY

MISA Zambia has condemned the verbal threats against the media made by Mafinga Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga.

MISA Chairperson Lorraine Chisanga says information reaching MISA Zambia indicates that Mr. Chabinga uttered threats against the media in his remarks during the press briefing on Thursday 4th July 2024 threatening to liquidate any media house that provides coverage to Miles Sampa as PF President.

Ms. Chisanga said the Organization finds such threats as attacks on the efforts of the media in their role to promote democracy in the nation and against freedom of expression and press freedom which stand as the bedrock of a democratic nation.

She said MISA, has also found these threats intimidating and an infringement on the role of the media of educating, informing, and entertaining including through news, opinion, analysis, and sports reporting.

“Targeting journalists and truth is threatening media freedom”, said Ms. Chisanga in a statement issued to RCV News today.

Ms. Chisanga has since urged the public to treat the media as a stakeholder in the development of the nation and further advised the journalists and media owners to stand firm and continue their effective service without fear of reprisal.
