The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has clarified that no employee currently working for TAZARA will lose their job under the newly introduced concession arrangement.
The Ministry has assured the public that approximately 200 to 300 employees will instead transition to the new Concessionaire, while the majority will continue their employment under TAZARA.
This clarification comes in response to recent information being circulated online, depicting Minister of Transport and logistic, Frank Tayali, informing President, Hakainde Hichilema, that about 200 TAZARA workers will be laid off in the new Concessionaire.
“Contrary to the falsehoods, the Labour Movement within TAZARA has been fully engaged throughout the concession process and every effort is being made to ensure that no worker is left behind,” said the Ministry in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
The ministry further stated that with a significant scale-up of operations anticipated under the Concessionaire, manpower demands are expected to instead increase, particularly in the first three years of operation.
The Ministry stressed that this concession is not a sell-out, but a strategic modernization of one of Southern Africa’s most critical trade corridors.
