STORE MAIZE PROPERLY TO PREVENT AFLATOXINS

Agriculture expert, Gilbert Banda, has urged farmers to follow proper procedures when securing their maize this harvest season, to prevent the development of aflatoxins.

Mr. Banda noted that some parts of the country are still experiencing rainfall, and warned farmers against leaving their crops in the field, instead, he advised them to take proactive steps to protect their harvest.

Speaking when he featured on Christian Voice’s Chatback program in Lusaka today, Mr. Banda emphasized the importance of proper post-harvest handling.

“Farmers who may not have access to formal storage facilities can opt to dry their maize in open, well-ventilated spaces, provided there is sufficient warmth,” said Mr. Banda.

He further warned that poor storage practices can lead to the development of aflatoxins, which are harmful to both human health and the nation’s food security.
