Scope Zambia, a Non Governmental Organization that works towards the promotion of permaculture in schools, colleges & communities, has bemoaned the continued phasing out of the traditional foods in Zambia, in preference for fast foods.
Organization Senior Finance and Administration, Sakalani Phiri, says Scope Zambia has since intervened by starting local foods cooking competition in schools so that pupils can learn of their traditional foods.
Mr. Sakala was speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka on the sidelines of the local foods cooking competition where 5 schools from Chilanga and Chobombo participated to raise awareness on the importance and benefits of traditional foods.
He said local foods are part of Zambia’s culture and traditions and that they must be kept alive for the coming generations.
“The coming generations will have a chance learn about their roots from the foods once they are preserved,” said Mr. Phiri.
And Mr. Phiri said traditional foods are more nutritious and are healthier than fast foods hence the need for Zambians to promote their consumption in their respective homes.
The cooking competition, which was won by Shalubala Secondary School was held under the theme “ My Food is African.”
Other schools that participated in the competition include Musamba Primary School, Mt. Makuru Secondary School, Bayuni Primary School and Chibombo Primary School.
