RECRUITMENT OF 4,200 TEACHERS CONCLUDED

Government, through the Ministry of Education, has completed the recruitment of 4,200 teachers nationwide, with the list of selected candidates set to be published tomorrow in both print and electronic media.

Minister of Education, Douglas Syakalima, announced that the recruited teachers include 424 for Early Childhood Education, 1,136 for Primary Education, and 2,640 for Secondary Education.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Syakalima explained that the 2024 teacher recruitment process did not require new applications but instead relied on the existing database of applicants from the 2023 net recruitment exercise.

He further revealed that out of the 420 positions reserved for teachers with disabilities, 202 were successfully recruited, with selections guided by subject requirements under the new curriculum.

“As per policy, 10% of the 4,200 positions were reserved for teachers with disabilities,” said Mr. Syakalima.

He also disclosed that 2,400 of the newly recruited teachers are replacements due to attrition resulting from retirements, resignations, dismissals, and deaths.

Meanwhile, Teacher Service Commission Chairperson Daphne Chimuka noted that the recruitment aligns with the new competency-based curriculum, designed to address the evolving needs of Zambia’s education system.

Ms. Chimuka commended key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, the Teaching Council of Zambia, and the Examinations Council of Zambia, for their role in ensuring a successful recruitment process.
