The Rural Electrification Authority, REA, has commissioned the 33KV grid power project in Nyawa area of Kazungula District in Southern Province, constructed at over K23.4 Million.
The Nyawa Grid project involved the construction of 50.05KM of overhead lines from the existing 33KV and 8.8KM low voltage from Zimba District, funded under the 2023 REA work budget.
Speaking during the launch in Kazungula today, REA Acting Director Strategy and Planning Chilala Bowa appealed to Nyawa residents to productively use the electricity provided.
She said it is anticipated that there will be improvement in social lives of the people in Nyawa and that pupils will have enough time to study.
“There should be education excellence in Nyawa and no excuse for pupils to fail,” said Dr. Bowa in a speech delivered on behalf of REA Chief Executive Officer, Linus Chanda.
Speaking during the same launch, Kazungula District Commissioner Elias Siamibila encouraged those who received Constituency Development Fund CDF loans and grants in the area, to utilize the electricity for meaningful projects.
He said projects such as welding will improve income levels of the people in Nyawa.
And Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Yolanta Mutyambe said government is determined to bridge inequality through rural electrification.
She said the launched power project will increase retail trading, maize milling adding that better services will be offered in schools and clinics in Nyawa.
Ms. Mutyambe said over 2000 houses are expected to be powered under the Nyawa Grid project.
