PUBLIC INTEREST OUTWEIGHS FAMILY PREFERENCES IN ECL FUNERAL  – KABESHA

Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, says government’s decision to involve the courts in the burial of former President Edgar Lungu, is based on the principle that public interest outweighs family preferences.

Mr. Kabesha emphasized that Mr. Lungu was not an ordinary citizen, but a former head of state, a position that carries national significance, which Mr. Lungu himself understood when he assumed office.

Speaking during an appearance on the national broadcaster today, Mr. Kabesha said government turned to the judiciary as a last resort to ensure the former president is buried on Zambian soil.

“The courts have allowed that the remains of Mr. Lungu are not buried today because there is need for both parties to continue discussions and the courts will listen to both parties on 14th July, 2025”, said Mr. Kabesha.

He added that all efforts being made are aimed at allowing over 20 million Zambians the opportunity to pay their last respects  to the former president, the same manner as previous heads of state.

He said that it is culturally, morally, and spiritually right that the foyer head of state is buried on home soil.
