POWER SUPPLY WILL ONLY STABILIZE IN MAY

Former Minister of Energy, Mukanga Kamfwa says despite the improved rainfall pattern experiences lately, power supply can only improve between April and May 2025.

The country has in recent days seen an increase of rainfall activities, with some provinces recording flash floods.

But speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Kamfwa explained that the delayed impact is tied to the time it takes for rainfall in Mwinilunga to replenish critical reservoirs, including the Kariba Dam, which remains a vital source of hydroelectric power.

“While the nation welcomes the improved rainfall, it’s not a quick fix because the water needs to flow from upstream areas to Kariba Dam, and that takes time,” said Mr. Kamfwa.

Mr. Kamfwa has therefore emphasized the urgent need for Zambia to diversify its energy sources to reduce over-reliance on hydropower, which has been strained by erratic rainfall and climate change to address the nation’s long-term energy needs.
