POLITICAL PARTIES MOURN EDITH NAWAKWI

Various political parties have expressed sadness following the passing of opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) President, Edith Nawakwi, describing her as a trailblazer in Zambian politics.

United Party for National Development (UPND) Secretary General, Batuke Imenda, said the ruling party is saddened by the loss of a leader who contributed to the advancement of women’s participation in politics and governance.

Mr. Imenda also paid tribute to Ms. Nawakwi’s role in promoting democracy and multipartyism in Zambia, through the various government positions she held between 1991 and 2021.

“The party is grateful for the role she played, particularly during the alliance days under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which brought together UNIP, FDD, and UPND in the 2006 general elections when she served as Vice President to then UDA presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema,” said Mr. Imenda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Tonse Alliance Spokesperson, Sean Tembo, described Ms. Nawakwi as a vibrant and fearless political figure who demonstrated courage and determination throughout her career.

“Even in the final days of her illness, President Edith Nawakwi remained steadfast in providing checks and balances to the current administration,” said Mr. Tembo.

Meanwhile, Republican Progressive Party (RPP) President, Leslie Chikuse, also paid homage to Ms. Nawakwi, remembering her as a courageous and outspoken leader who made significant contributions to Zambia’s political and economic landscape.

“She will be remembered for her boldness, her unwavering stance on national issues, and her commitment to the betterment of Zambia,” said Mr. Chikuse.
