POLICE OFFICER TO FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION AFTER ABANDONING AK 47

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga says disciplinary action has been taken against a police officer, that abandoned an AK-47 rifle with ammunition, after consuming alcohol while on duty in Mansa.

On Wednesday June 5, 2024, a police officer, Daritso Mbewe, was deployed to perform guard duties at a Building Society Bank and while on duty, consumed alcohol and abandoned his post leaving behind an AK-47 rifle with ammunition.

Mr. Hamoonga said that observing the situation, members of the public promptly reported the matter to Mansa Central Police Station.

“Officers responded swiftly and were able to recover the abandoned AK-47 rifle saying that the firearm has been secured and is currently being kept in the police armoury,” said Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

Mr. Hamoonga has assured the public that such behaviour will not be tolerated within the police service.
