PICZ-AIRTEL PARTNERSHIP TARGETS TO INSURE 1 MILLION ZAMBIANS

Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia (PICZ) has collaborated with Airtel Zambia in a strategic move aimed at increasing insurance coverage across the country, with a goal of insuring 1 million Zambians by 2027.

PICZ Managing Director Moses Siame highlighted that the low insurance uptake in Zambia is largely due to a lack of awareness.

Speaking at the official launch of the partnership between PICZ and Airtel Zambia in Lusaka today, Mr. Siame said the collaboration will help extend insurance services to previously hard-to-reach populations through Airtel’s mobile money platform.

“Insurance has evolved from being just a product to becoming a way of life,” said Mr. Siame.

He added that the partnership will not only improve accessibility but also enhance the overall customer experience and boost growth in the insurance sector.

And speaking at the same event, Airtel Zambia Country Director, Andrew Chuma, noted that the collaboration will offer a seamless insurance process, enabling customers to access services conveniently via USSD technology.

Meanwhile, Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, has commended the partnership, calling it a crucial step towards overcoming barriers such as distance and bureaucracy.

Mr. Mutati emphasized that the current insurance penetration rate of 6% is far too low and expressed hope that such collaborations will help address this challenge.

He noted that government is working to expand digital connectivity by 2026, aiming to make digital platforms more accessible for insurance services.

This, he said, will help anticipate needs and deliver insurance services included more effectively.

“We have the intellect and creativity to develop homegrown solutions to these challenges,” said Mr. Mutati.
