PHYCOLOGIST BEMOANS RISE IN THROAT CANCER AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE

A psychologist, Kizito Mulewa, has expressed concern over the rising cases of throat cancer among young people, stating that it poses a threat to the country’s future, as youths are the leaders of tomorrow.

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) yesterday issued a statement revealing an increase in throat cancer cases among young people, attributing the trend to excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and exposure to radiation, among other factors.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mulewa said that many young people engage in illicit activities because they lack constructive things to do.

He urged government to establish recreation centres to keep youths occupied and steer them away from harmful behaviours that could lead to fatal consequences.

“In order to help youths already addicted to drugs, government should consider establishing rehabilitation centres across the country where they can receive proper monitoring and support to overcome their addiction,” said Mr. Mulewa.

He also called on the Ministry of Education to introduce programs in schools that educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse to help curb the vice.
