PF URGES ECZ TO RECONSIDER LUMEZI BY-ELECTION DATE

Tonse Alliance Secretary General, Raphael Nakachinda, has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to reconsider its decision to proceed with the Lumezi parliamentary by-election on the scheduled date, citing the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the repatriation of the late Sixth Republican President, Edgar Lungu.

This follows the ECZ’s statement yesterday confirming that the Lumezi by-election would proceed as planned, in accordance with constitutional requirements that a by-election be held within 90 days of a parliamentary seat falling vacant.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Nakachinda noted that the period of national mourning has disrupted campaign activities, making it difficult for political parties to engage with voters effectively.

“Rescheduling the by-election is what should have been done by the ECZ to allow participating political parties to fully take part in the electoral process,” said Mr. Nakachinda.

Mr. Nakachinda, however, stressed that the country is currently facing a unique and somber situation, and called on the ECZ to show flexibility in light of the national mourning period.
