The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has called on government to effectively address low salaries and pay disparities among teachers in the country.
Speaking at the NAQEZ 10th Anniversary Conference in Lusaka today, organization’s Executive Director, Aaron Chansa, emphasized the need for improved teacher remuneration.
He stated that in 2025, NAQEZ intends to intensify its advocacy for a salary increment to enhance teachers’ financial stability, even beyond their retirement.
Dr. Chansa stressed that teachers are the backbone of the education sector and that ensuring their well-being is crucial for delivering quality education.
“There is need for improved accommodation standards for educators and increased funding for primary schools to create a more conducive learning environment for both teachers and learners,” said Dr. Chansa.
Meanwhile, NAQEZ Board Secretary, Kingsley Hakabulo, underscored the need to amend the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) policy to give civil servants, especially teachers, the option to access their pension benefits either as a lump sum or through partial payments throughout their retirement.
