The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has assured Kitwe residents that the water supplied by utility companies is safe for consumption.
Speaking at a media breakfast meeting in Lusaka today, NWASCO Director, Kelvin Chitumbo, stated that although utility companies in Kitwe were temporarily shut down due to the contamination of the Mwambashi River, various interventions have been implemented to ensure the provision of
Mr. Chitumbo further highlighted progress in the maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction of dams aimed at improving water harvesting across Zambia.
“So far, 351 dams have been maintained out of the 770 planned for rehabilitation, at a cost of over K46 million,” said Mr. Chitumbo.
He added that the procurement process for contractors to work on the remaining 12 dams out of a targeted 20 is expected to be completed this year.
Mr. Chitumbo said that the construction of these remaining dams, initially scheduled for an earlier phase, has now been deferred to this year.
