NGOCC SUPPORTS CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS, WITH CALL FOR ROADMAP

The Non-governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has welcomed the national constitutional amendments with a call for a national consensus and clear roadmap.

NGOCC Board Chairperson, Beauty Katebe, says the process will increase the participation of women, youths and persons with disability in politics.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Ms. Katebe believes that an improved Bill of Rights will create a justifiable space to litigate for equal participation and will provide for stronger legal protections in this regard.

“It is very clear that the electoral system in its current form has not helped to level the political space and to allow for inclusiveness,” said Ms. Katebe

She has since urged government to share the roadmap and the proposed draft constitutional amendment bill to ensure broad-based stakeholder engagement that will garner consensus on process and content.
