Mumbwa District Commisioner, Namukolo Hayumbu, has called for the formulation of policies that enforce mindset change among people, for them to protect the environment in the wake of climate change .
Ms. Hayumbu said this today when Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Governor, Denny Kalyalya, and his team, paid a courtesy call at her office ahead of the donation of 1,500 indigenous trees as the Central Bank celebrates 60 years of existence.
Ms. Hayumbu said there should be a better way that humans can exist with the environment by enforcing its protection as opposed to its destruction.
“Man should take care of the environment and not destroy it so that nature can in turn take care of man,” said Ms. Hayumbu.
And Ms. Hayumbu said Mumbwa is enforcing a total ban on charcoal to save the environment.
She also said the district is working on ensuring that Tomatoe farmers find alternative means of supporting their plants by planting Bamboo plants.
Speaking during the same meeting, BoZ Governor, Denny Kalyalya, said the rate at which people are cutting down trees is affecting human existence.
He said this is why the Central Bank wants to contribute to climate change mitigation measures by planting trees.
Dr. Kalyalya said the move is meant to plant a seed for the next generation.
