MPULUNGU HARBOR PROJECT EXPANSION IN NEED OF CASH

Northern Province Minister, Leonard Mbao, has attributed the stalled expansion of Mpulungu Harbor to lack of financial resources.

In 2022, government announced plans to expand Mpulungu Harbor with funding from the Dutch government.

But speaking on Christian Voice’s Chatback program during a discussion on whether the UPND government has done enough to unlock the Northern Circuit, Mr. Mbao revealed that the $60 million project remains on hold due to funding challenges.

“The Dutch government expressed interest in financing 60% of the project, but at the time, the Zambian government was unable to fund the remaining 40% due to competing national priorities,” Mr. Mbao explained.

He further stated that government is actively engaging the Chinese government to explore a public-private partnership (PPP) as a possible funding solution for the project.
