MOST YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE HEALTH CONDITION

The Ministry of Health has revealed that, according to global research, 15% of young people aged 10 to 35 have a diagnosable mental health condition, significantly contributing to the global burden of disease.

Speaking at the launch of the YMCA Zambia Mental Health Advocacy Program, themed “Empowering Voices, Strengthening Minds, and Building a Resilient Future for Mental Health Advocacy, Minister of Health Elijah Muchima emphasized the need to improve mental health services and awareness in the country.

Dr. Muchima called on stakeholders including government, civil society, and community organizations to foster a stable environment where mental health is recognized, respected, and supported.

In a speech read on his behalf by Acting Director of Public Health, Matildah Kakungu, the minister commended YMCA Zambia for its dedication to mental health advocacy.

Meanwhile, YMCA Zambia National General Secretary, Esther Zulu, stressed that mental health should no longer be a subject whispered about behind closed doors.

She urged people to unite in breaking down barriers, offering support, and driving lasting change.

“By working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities across Zambia,” said Zulu.
