Mongu Municipal Council (MMC) has seized two carcasses from illegal slaughterhouses in Katongo area.
The animals were being slaughtered in unsanitary conditions at the time of inspection.
Council Assistant Public Relations Manager, Abigail Sitenge, told RCV News in statement that a team of officers from Public Health and Veterinary Services department led by Chief Public Health Inspector seized the two carcasses as well as 60 kilograms of uncertified meat from Central and Kapulanga markets during routine inspections this week.
“The two animals were being slaughtered in unsanitary conditions and in addition, no ante mortem and postmortem was conducted,” said Ms. Sitenge.
Ms. Sitenge said this was done pursuant to Public Health Act Cap 295 (Meat, Abattoir and Butcheries Regulations) of the Laws of Zambia.
She highlighted that Central and Kapulanga markets, the traders were found selling meat that is not certified fit for human consumption which contravenes provisions of the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018.
Ms. Sitenge added that an inspection was conducted on the two carcasses and later they were donated to the Mongu Correctional facility while the 60kgs of meat seized from the market was disposed of.
She has urged members of the public to avoid buying meat that is sold in an unhygienic environment to prevent exposure to pathogens that can lead to diseases.
