The Ministry of Health (MoH) has launched a Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) training program for Zambia Police officers, reaffirming its commitment to reducing HIV infections across the country.
Speaking during the launch in Lusaka, Lusaka Province Health Director, Simulyamana Choonga, described the program as a critical component of government’s national HIV prevention strategy.
“Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision is a scientifically proven intervention that significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission and contributes to lowering cervical cancer rates among women, especially in high-prevalence areas,” said Dr. Choonga.
He noted that the training initiative demonstrates the Ministry’s dedication to delivering quality healthcare services not only to police personnel but also to the broader community.
Dr. Choonga explained that the selection process for trainees was inclusive and collaborative, bringing together experts from both the police and health sectors to ensure the effective rollout of the program.
He highlighted the urgency of the initiative, citing a worrying trend of HIV-related loss of skilled officers within the Zambia Police Service.
