MINISTER OF LABOR REFUTES INTENTIONS TO REMOVE GRATUITY

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, says the proposed amendment on the Employment Code of 2019, submitted to the Ministry of Justice in May, are not final but are intended to include the position of key stakeholders.

Ms. Tambatamba says contents of the bill will be subjected to the tripartite partners, including the Zambia National Congress of Trade Unions, for further consultations before being taken to cabinet for approval.

She said this when she gave a Ministerial Statement in Parliament this morning, on the alleged planned countrywide protests by the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, following the alleged government’s proposed amendments of the Employment Code Act no 3 of 2019 to remove gratuity and other allowances.

Ms. Tambatamba also said it is not true that the contents include the removal of gratuity and other allowances, saying the Siavonga meeting amendments are seeking to specify circumstances under which the gratuity will be paid and the applicable rates.

She assured that her ministry will continue to engage stakeholders to ensure the proposed amendment are a product of meaningful dialogue among stakeholders.
