The Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) has expressed concern with the tragic loss of life resulting from illegal mining activities, particularly the recent incident in Mufumbwe District, North-Western Province.
ANDD Executive Director, Samuel Banda, illegal mining continues to endanger lives, deprive the nation of vital resources, and expose communities to unnecessary risks.
Mr. Banda acknowledged that while many individuals engage in such activities due to desperation and limited opportunities, the cost in human life is far too high.
“No family should ever have to grieve the loss of a loved one who died in the pursuit of survival under dangerous and unregulated conditions,” said Mr. Banda.
He emphasized the urgent need to formalize and regularize small-scale mining operations to ensure that citizens benefit more safely and sustainably from Zambia’s natural resources.
Mr. Banda said such reforms would not only create safer jobs and better incomes but also boost national revenue, which can be channeled into roads, schools, clinics, and clean water systems.
