Mining expert Edward Simukonda has called on government to implement stringent laws and tougher penalties to combat illegal mining and the smuggling of minerals across the country.
His remarks come in the wake of a recent incident in which an Indian national was arrested at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle over two million US dollars and seven pieces of suspected gold to Dubai.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Simukonda emphasized that mineral smuggling poses a serious threat to Zambia’s mining sector and overall economy, particularly through the loss of revenue from undeclared exports.
“Such activities not only result in significant financial losses for the country but also undermine legitimate mining operations and weaken the ability to accurately monitor and report mineral exports,” said Mr. Simukonda.
Mr. Simukonda stressed the urgent need for coordinated enforcement efforts and policy reforms to safeguard Zambia’s mineral wealth and ensure that all resources benefit the nation.
