MENTAL EXPERT CALLS FOR AWARENESS ON SCHOOL VIOLENCE

Mental Health Analyst Gabriel Lungu has emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness and support for mental health and safety in schools, highlighting the critical role this plays in promoting students’ well-being and positive behaviour.

This week, an incident of violence occurred at Canisius Boys Secondary Boarding School in Monze district of southern province where a 15-year-old Grade 11 pupil allegedly stabbed a grade 12 pupil during a cleaning period.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Lungu expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that it has also drawn attention to the often-overlooked issue of sexual abuse, including sodomy in boarding schools and the severe psychological trauma it inflicts on victims.

“Addressing mental health is not just about reacting to  the crisis, but about fostering a culture where learners’ emotional and psychological needs are prioritized,” said Mr. Lungu.

Mr. Lungu also stressed the pivotal role parents play in their children’s mental health, urging them to actively engage with their children and equip them with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of school life

He also emphasized the need for schools to have a counselling department where students can access support and guidance from trained professionals.
