The Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) has joined the rest of the world in marking Menstrual Hygiene Day, calling for an end to menstrual stigma and promoting dignity, equality, and empowerment for girls.
FAWEZA Executive Director, Costern Kanchele, has urged all stakeholders to treat menstrual health as a priority in achieving gender equality.
Mr. Kanchele commended government for providing free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, especially in rural areas, noting that the initiative has improved school attendance and boosted girls’ confidence.
“This year’s Menstrual hygiene day is being commemorated under the theme, together for a Period-Friendly Worlds, sending a reminder that achieving menstrual equity requires more than just access to products it requires lasting societal change,” said Mr. Kanchele in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Kanchele also stressed the need for menstrual education in schools, open family conversations, and increased investment in menstrual health infrastructure.
He further called for collective action from schools, families, communities, and policymakers to create safe, stigma-free environments.
