The Medicines Research and Access Platform (MedRap) has raised concerns over food safety standards in restaurants and supermarkets, following the recent temporary closure of Hungry Lion Chilanga by the Chilanga Town Council.
The closure was prompted by the detection of fecal contamination in water used for food preparation and the presence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in cooked chicken.
MedRap Executive Director, Liyoka Liyoka, has condemned the apparent disregard for food safety regulations by some food handlers in the country.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Liyoka described such incidents as unacceptable, especially in establishments that serve food to the public.
“The food preparation systems in some places do not meet required standards and are not thoroughly inspected,” said Mr. Liyoka.
He has since urged local authorities to intensify inspections in food outlets and called on all food handlers to strictly adhere to safety regulations to protect public health and avoid legal consequences.
