Minister of Agriculture Mtolo Phiri says there is need to make Agri-food systems transformation more efficient, sustainable, inclusive and resilient.
Mr. Mtolo stated that in the face of rapidly evolving and unprecedented global challenges, soil health, selection of appropriate crops, water-use and fertilizer-use efficiency are critical to sustainable increased production and productivity.
The Minster said this when he delivered a speech at the official opening of the three-day 12th Plenary Session of the Global Soil Partnership at FAO headquarters in Rome on 3rd June 2024.
“This aligns very well with the agenda 2030 on agri-food systems transformation and a better life, leaving no one behind,” said Mr. Mtolo in a statement.
Mr. Mtolo also emphasized that soil is an essential resource and part of the natural environment from which most of the food is produced.
He has appealed to the Global Soil Partnership, GSP, and, the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, to continue working with the Zambian government to address adaption and emergency responses to impacts of climate change.
This is contained in a statement issued to RCV News by First Secretary for Press at the Zambian embassy in Italy Pamela Mulenga.
