The Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) says there is significant progress in stabilizing water supply in the city, particularly in areas served by the Kafue River system.
This follows the uninterrupted operation of the Iolanda 1 and Iolanda 2 water treatment plants, which supply water 24/7.
In a statement to RCV News today, LWSC Managing Director Jilly Chiyombwe highlighted the measures the company has undertaken to improve the water supply including the installation of four diesel generators at key locations in Chainda, Ibex Hill, Nyumba Yanga and Kabanana.
“The supply is reasonably stable for areas receiving surface water from Kafue River and for borehole-fed areas, we’ve made critical interventions, including the installation of diesel generators, as an alternative source of energy to ensure continuity of supply during periods of load management,” said Mr. Chiyombwe.
He said LWSC is procuring a hybrid solar system for the Margaret Mwachiyeya Wellfield and booster station to ensure stable supply to Chongwe town, a project, funded by government through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation at a cost of K5 million with aim to improve water supply to these communities.
Mr. Chiyombwe also revealed that plans to connect Kabanana to the surface water network from Matero Tanks have advanced stating that the project will be funded through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) and is expected to further enhance water supply reliability in the area.
He also noted that PHI and parts of Mtendere would soon be connected to the surface water network from the Great East Road gravity water main through Levy Mwanawasa Medical University among other projects.
Meanwhile, Chiyombwe has expressed concern over the continued abuse of sewer infrastructure.
“We are seeing residents throwing solid waste into sewer lines, causing recurrent sewer spillages,” said Mr. Chiyombwe.
He further urged residents to refrain from these practices and to help us safeguard the infrastructure to ensure effective function of the system for everyone.
