LUSAKA MAYOR URGES WASTE MANAGEMENT MINDSET SHIFT

Lusaka Mayor, Chilando Chitangala, has called for a change of mindset among residents regarding waste management.

Ms. Chitangala made this statement in light of the many residents who illegally dump garbage within the city.

The Mayor stressed the importance of residents subscribing to proper solid waste management practices to prevent indiscriminate disposal of rubbish.

She pointed out that many people in the city do not adhere to the existing solid waste management initiatives, leading to significant challenges in managing waste.

Ms. Chitangalo urged residents to abandon the mentality of “boma iyanganepo” (the government will take care of it) and take personal responsibility for maintaining sanitary conditions which directly affect individuals’ health.

She also commended the Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Health Education Officers for their efforts in conducting educational campaigns, but called for an increase in such initiatives to reach a wider audience.

And Ms. Chitangalo urged drivers and passengers to refrain from littering by throwing rubbish out of vehicle windows.

She said this habit significantly contributes to poor sanitation and the blockage of drainage systems around the city.

This is contained in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today by LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Nyambe Bulumba.
