LUSAKA BUSINESSMAN FINED FOR AIDING ETHIOPIANS

The Kasama Regional Immigration Office has secured the conviction of a 25-year-old businessman of Lusaka’s Chalala, Honest Marebesa, for aiding and abetting 12 undocumented Ethiopian nationals.

“Honest Marebesa, acting with two others, with whom he was jointly charged, was handed over to the Kasama Regional Immigration Office by Police on 11th May 2023,” Immigration Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka, has said in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

Mr. Nshinka said the Police apprehended the trio on 7th May 2023 in connection with the aiding and abetting of 12 undocumented Ethiopians, who were discovered in the bushes in the Nkole Mfumu area, after being abandoned.

He said on 21st March 2024, the Kasama Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced Honest Marebesa to a fine of K 60,000 or nine months simple imprisonment while the cases of the other two are still before Court.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nshinka said the Luanshya Immigration Office, on 25th March 2024, secured the conviction of a 33-year-old Ugandan Refugee, Christopher Kimuli, for being found at a place other than a refugee settlement and unlawful stay.

“He was arrested on 19th March 2024 at the Luanshya Magistrate Court, where he was appearing for a police matter” said Mr. Nshinka.

Mr. Nshinka said he was sentenced to pay a fine of K18,500 or nine months simple imprisonment, while for unlawful stay, he was fined K 12,000 or nine months simple imprisonment, on the count of being found at a place other than a refugee settlement.

And Mr. Nshinka said the Chingola Immigration Office has secured the conviction of two Chinese technicians, Kaiwen Huang (37) of Polyin Alliance Investment and Qingshan Ke (42) of Xing Investment, for unlawful stay.

He said the duo was nabbed on 20th March 2024 during a routine operation.

“Huang’s Temporary Employment Permit expired while Ke’s application for an employment Permit was rejected. Neither attempted to legalize their stay, and on 21st March 2024, the Chingola Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced them to pay a fine of K 12,000 each or, in default, nine months of simple imprisonment,” said Mr. Nshinka.
