Opposition Leadership Movement Secretary General, Jairos Ngoma, has called on government to allow Zambian motorists, especially those living near the border, to access cheaper fuel from neighbouring Malawi.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Ngoma argued that there is no law barring citizens from sourcing affordable fuel across the border, and said the move could ease the burden of high fuel prices on ordinary Zambians.
“There’s no legislation that stops people from getting cheaper fuel elsewhere and if government is concerned about motorists going into Malawi to fill up their tanks, then the solution is to reduce the cost of fuel locally, ”said Mr. Ngoma.
He warned that if the current prices of fuel remain unchanged, more Zambians will continue crossing into Malawi in search of relief at the pump, especially those in border areas where the difference in fuel prices is most felt.
