Lusaka City Council (LCC) says the second quarter of 2024 saw an increase of 44.6% of legally recognized marriages, compared to the same period last year.
LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Nyambe Bulumba, says 1,165 legal marriages were registered in the second quarter of 2024, indicating 359 more marriages as compared to the same period in 2023, when 806 marriages were recorded.
“This figure comprises 1,082 ordinary marriages and 83 express marriages conducted,” said Mr. Bulumba in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Bulumba said the council attributes this surge in recorded marriages to its intensified mass sensitization and campaigns on the importance of legalized marriages.
“With the continued quarterly increase in marriages, the council projects to register close to 5,000 marriages by the end of 2024,” said Mr. Bulumba.
He encouraged all couples to follow the legal process and register their marriages with the council to avoid potential legal complications in the future.
Meanwhile Families are Nations Founder, Judith Mwila, said the increase in legally registered marriages is positive development to the growth of families in Zambia.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Ms. Mwila however encouraged couples to understand the meaning of marriage beyond the registration certificate and strive to keep their marriages.
